The Palestinian Refugee Project
The Palestinian Refugee Project was invited to speak recently at a local branch meeting of the Women's Institute (WI). I was asked to speak about life on the camp of Ain il Hilweh for Palestinian refugees, highlighting the struggle we endure on a daily basis as refugees in a country that grants us no rights, desperately wanting our right to return to Palestine.
My mother-in-law is a member of
the local branch of WI and has been tremendously supportive of me as a
Palestinian Refugee, she goes against the grain and has seen through the
pro Zionist propaganda here in the UK and has thrown herself fully into
supporting the Palestinian refugees. With her support and influence she
has been able to get our first event booked and it was a great
success.
It was very well attended and a video that I presented of daily life for a Palestinian refugee was very well received. It was painfully clear though that most of the members present knew nothing about the Palestinian refugees and our history. This is sadly not a surprise, we are forgotten, we are ignored, we are marginalised in favour of refugees that fit a political rhetoric and this is what the Palestinian Refugee Project was set up to counter.
This is the first opportunity for the PRP to raise it's voice in public to break through the imposed isolation of the Palestinian refugees and we know that it will not be the last time! We are available to speak on the situation the Palestinian refugees face and the issues we want to raise in our support.
We will fight for our right to exist, we will fight to change the language surrounding the occupation of Palestine, we will fight to get our voice heard.
